What Is An Ethical Will?

Ethical wills date back to a Jewish tradition.  This document is designed to pass ethical values from one generation to the next

Modernly, ethical wills have gained popularity.  Ethical wills are used to pass on information, values, history, and hopes for the future generations.  Ethical wills are personal and can take many different forms.  They also can be written as a general letter to all family and friends or they can be personalized.

The typical sections of an Ethical Will are as follows:

  • Opening – Most Ethical Wills are written in the form of a letter.  The preparer should structure the document with the reader in mind.
  • History – This is an opportunity to write about your most cherished memories, your greatest accomplishments, and the individuals who had a major impact on your life.
  • Personal values and beliefs – This is an opportunity for you to share your personal values and beliefs.  These values can be things relating to your faith or values toat led you to your professional success.
