Do you know the name of the only U.S. President to die intestate?

First, let me explain, intestate means that an individual died without a will.  If a decedent does not have a will or any other estate planning device, the court will determine who will receive the proceeds of the estate using the laws of intestate succession.

President Abraham Lincoln was the first U.S. President to be assassinated and die intestate.  Lincoln was assassinated on April 15, 1865 at the age of 36.

His estate was worth $100,000 and was awarded to his wife, Mary Todd Lincoln and their two sons, Robert Todd Lincoln and Thomas Lincoln.

There have been three other Presidents assassinated, James Garfield, William McKinley, and John Kennedy.  Each of these presidents died testate.
